Statement of Research Interest
Molecular Toxicology Laboratory consists of two research groups.
The DNA repair group, led by Marta Popovic, investigates the processes
of DNA repair with a special focus on DNA-protein cross-links. The group
uses various approaches, including molecular and cellular biology,
protein biochemistry, structural studies (Cryo-EM) and animal models,
including zebrafish, with the aim of deciphering the structure-function
relationship of multiple nuclear proteins involved in the repair of
DNA-protein crosslinks.
The ecotoxicology group, led by Tvrtko Smital, performs basic
ecotoxicological research to understand (1) Molecular basis and role of
critical cellular defense and detoxification mechanisms in aquatic
organisms and (2) Interactions of cellular defense mechanisms with
classical and emerging environmental contaminants. A particular focus of
the group is on membrane transporters and their role in the uptake and
efflux of contaminants in cellular and zebrafish models.
